Myles found a passport to self-discovery

Scholarships led him to a global Buckeye community.

The beauty of being a Buckeye is that wherever life takes you, your community is there. Myles Canty learned this early on during his academic journey at Ohio State.

Struggling to fit in his first year, Myles applied for a study abroad program in Hamburg, Germany, as part of the Fisher College of Business Freshman Global Lab. That trip, made possible by generous donor-funded scholarships, helped him find a sense of belonging as he navigated campus life.

“It opened my eyes to how important it is to get diverse perspectives,” says Myles, who graduated in May with a finance and economics degree from Fisher College of Business. “It took me out of my comfort zone, inspired me to hold my ground at Ohio State and sparked a desire to do more with my time in college.”

Traveling to Germany was the first of many life-changing opportunities for Myles. A member of Fisher's Honors Cohort Program, he studied and worked in South Africa, Spain, Brazil and across the United States, which enhanced his education in ways he never thought possible.

“The best part about being a Buckeye is that we are everywhere,” Myles says. While in Brazil, a Buckeye alum took time to speak with his group about living abroad. “That we have alumni in Sao Paulo of all places is just insane.”

“No matter what country, city or town I’m in, there is always a Buckeye there. It’s refreshing to be part of a community that’s willing to do anything for each other.”

When Myles began his college search, he didn’t yet know he would find his community at Ohio State. He loved math and was looking for a prestigious business school at a large university. As the oldest of three siblings who would overlap in college, he was also mindful of his family’s finances. With support from scholarship donors, Ohio State checked all the boxes.

“I love my family so much. They are why I work so hard,” says Myles, who supplemented scholarships with work as a teaching assistant, high school savings and support from his parents. “I only aspire to give my future family the life they have given me, so scholarships have been monumental.”

Empowered by scholarships and the people who invested in his future, Myles paid forward through service to the wider community. Alongside classmates, he launched a yearlong project that culminated in the Columbus Emerging Careers Expo, providing underemployed individuals in central Ohio with resume-building skills and employer connections. “It is one the things I am most proud of — and the most rewarding.”

Myles’ next stop is Chicago to join JPMorgan’s Global Finance and Business Management Rotational Program. Before that he plans to travel to Guatemala and hike in California with family. Because of generous donors like you, Myles gained a passport to belonging — and the momentum to open doors for others.
