Motivated gratitude

Dr. Weary’s enduring philanthropy and leadership

Dr. Gifford “Giff” Weary’s nearly four-decade relationship with The Ohio State University is defined by her unwavering commitment to excellence, visionary philanthropy and transformative leadership. Her relentless drive to elevate Ohio State is matched only by her generosity—through the Weary Family Foundation, she has endowed multiple chairs within the Department of Psychology, helping to secure the university’s reputation as a national and international leader in social psychology and interdisciplinary research. Dr. Weary’s belief in motivated gratitude fuels her efforts; she invests significant time and resources to ensure Ohio State remains at the forefront, continually raising the bar for academic excellence.

Dr. Weary’s influence reaches far beyond the laboratory and classroom. She is a dedicated member of Women & Philanthropy at Ohio State, having served in multiple leadership roles since joining in 2013. Most recently, she has contributed her expertise on the grants committee and as a member at large, helping to steer strategic giving and support for the university’s most innovative initiatives. As Women & Philanthropy celebrates its 20th anniversary, the organization recognizes how fortunate it is to count Dr. Weary among its ranks. Her visionary approach to giving and her commitment to nurturing excellence have made her a cornerstone of Ohio State’s philanthropic community.

As an accomplished researcher and emeritus faculty member, Dr. Weary’s philanthropic impact extends beyond funding. She established the Collaborative on the Science of Polarization and Misinformation (C-SPAM) and endowed positions that have attracted world-renowned psychologists like Dr. Kurt Gray and Dr. Kristen Lindquist to Ohio State. These transformative gifts have empowered the university to tackle society’s most pressing challenges, from polarization to public health, and have amplified interdisciplinary collaboration. Dr. Weary’s insight as a scholar herself ensures that these investments support curiosity-driven research and foster a culture of lifelong learning, one where future generations of students and faculty are inspired to solve “big world problems.”

Whether chairing the Foundation Board’s leadership and nominating committee or championing endowed positions, Dr. Weary’s legacy is a testament to the power of giving back. Her leadership and generosity continue to shape Ohio State’s future, enabling the university to attract top talent, expand research horizons, and make a lasting impact on society. As Ohio State looks ahead, Dr. Weary’s story reminds us of the indispensable role that committed, visionary philanthropists play in building a culture of excellence and opportunity.
