00:00:00:04 - 00:00:03:06 I think I'm influenced by events 00:00:03:06 - 00:00:07:14 and the event that I wanted to share was that, 00:00:08:12 - 00:00:11:21 and this was back when I was in graduate school, 00:00:11:21 - 00:00:16:04 so we're talking about 1971, 1972. 00:00:16:12 - 00:00:19:12 A neighbor had left a note 00:00:19:14 - 00:00:22:14 on our back door 00:00:23:17 - 00:00:26:17 saying that 00:00:27:14 - 00:00:30:14 she couldn't feed her kids, 00:00:31:06 - 00:00:34:06 would we help her out? 00:00:34:21 - 00:00:35:19 I still have that note 00:00:35:19 - 00:00:37:17 today. 00:00:37:17 - 00:00:41:06 We keep that note in our kitchen cabinet, 00:00:42:20 - 00:00:44:21 where she asked if she could 00:00:44:21 - 00:00:48:10 borrow a few dollars because her kids had not eaten that day. 00:00:48:15 - 00:00:53:07 She promised she would pay Keith back when she got her paycheck. 00:00:54:00 - 00:00:57:00 And so we keep it in a cabinet that we open every day, 00:00:57:03 - 00:01:00:23 just as a reminder of the importance of philanthropy. 00:01:01:19 - 00:01:04:19 When we think about the Monda Student Resource Center, 00:01:05:19 - 00:01:07:14 we think about a place 00:01:07:14 - 00:01:10:13 where people can come together. 00:01:10:13 - 00:01:11:15 No judgment. 00:01:11:15 - 00:01:12:07 No judgment. 00:01:12:07 - 00:01:14:19 No judgment, which is incredibly important. 00:01:14:19 - 00:01:17:19 It's not that you didn't do something right. 00:01:18:02 - 00:01:21:02 It's not that you're not good enough. 00:01:21:02 - 00:01:23:23 Circumstances didn't work for you. 00:01:23:23 - 00:01:27:19 We're going to put you in a place where you can succeed. 00:01:28:04 - 00:01:31:18 For us, it's all about leveling the playing field, 00:01:32:11 - 00:01:34:21 making sure that everybody 00:01:36:02 - 00:01:39:21 gets the opportunity to be successful 00:01:41:11 - 00:01:44:08 independent of how they define success. 00:01:44:08 - 00:01:46:14 And so that has been a guiding principle in 00:01:46:14 - 00:01:50:13 a lot of our philanthropy. I really get jazzed up by, 00:01:51:00 - 00:01:52:11 you know, trying to make a difference. 00:01:52:11 - 00:01:55:11 I mean, that's why I retired, I retired to do this. 00:01:55:23 - 00:01:58:02 And it's been wonderful. 00:01:58:02 - 00:02:00:08 You know, I don't I don't regret any of it. 00:02:00:08 - 00:02:04:05 I just wish I could, you know, a lot of times you wish you could do more. 00:02:04:05 - 00:02:07:05 It was clearly the right decision for me. 00:02:07:12 - 00:02:10:12 And I really am a big believer in paying it forward. 00:02:10:18 - 00:02:14:13 And this was just the perfect opportunity for me, for the rest 00:02:14:13 - 00:02:15:17 of my life to pay it forward.
